Cultural Immersion
What is cultural immersion: Cultural immersion can be defined as actively integrating into an unfamiliar community, interacting with local people, and seeking to understand the way others live in that community by being there and engaging in daily life activities. (Definition gathered from IGI Global).
Cultural immersion allows us to meet as human beings again.
“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”
― Nelson Mandela, Long Walk to Freedom
Build abroad (www.buildabroad.org) offers the following view as to why cultural immersion matters: Through cultural immersion, we discover that our own societal values and norms are just a tiny glimpse of the huge diversity that exists, and the way humans choose to live their lives contrasts dramatically across the globe. The benefits of taking the plunge and stepping into a new community are far-reaching, from the opportunity to learn new languages and taste new foods, to uncovering the key ingredients to happiness and well-being. Cultural immersion also helps put your own life in perspective and creates more compassionate individuals, something that is essential in the world we live in today.

Learn KiswahiliLearn Kiswahili
Currently the game has 9 levels that allow you to begin to interact with the language. There are also scene loading tips which also educate you on various African nations, capes and islands. For those who can hear, we also offer the word to you audibly as you look it up on the screen (we are working on levels that will be inclusive of those with partial or full hearing loss). This game was developed by Shem, one of our interns that hails from the Kiswahili capital of Kenya, Mombasa. We connected with him while on our 2019 trip and when we stopped off at Mombasa Baptist High School to drop off donations gathered by Greg Richards, a teacher from Noblesville High School. Greg attended our 2018 trip to Kenya. Shem is currently attending Kisii University where he is studying computer science on a partial Kenyan government scholarship that is performance based. Proceeds from the purchase of this game will go directly to Shem and a portion will then be donated to Community Education Arts Inc. You will NOT have to purchase the game again when updates are made to it. The idea for the game was birthed from living and child bearing abroad lol. I needed a way for my nephews and nieces to interact with the African languages we speak. Chemsha Bongo (Kiswahili for quiz) is phase one of that project. |

Shem & His Family
Working with Shem allows our organization to empower makers (developers) in the STEM field. Sometimes, empowerment can be as simple as giving someone a platform to share or passing on "tools" they can put to use. Shem is one of our marketing interns. He has learnt how to develop games by watching YouTube videos (developer videos) and signing up for various courses Miriam and Emily sourced him online. As much as he's studying computer science, Shem would really like to learn more about developing games. Gaming courses are not available at the university he was assigned/ invited to attend. Do you know of a way Shem can study gaming cost effectively? Please get in touch: 7656060777 (texts/ WhatsApp) or LHoCreationsnow@gmail.com. It takes a village (African quote).
