Stories from Africa

3/4/2020

Happy Wednesday,
We decided to give you thoughts from various African nations since our blogs are now centered on sharing experiences (stories) from across the globe in an effort to change The Single Story.

So let's kick it off with Zimbabwe: We have partnered with The Polk Street Review team for at least four years now and have had one of our team members featured in this publication as well.

This past Saturday, we not only catered their 2020 book launch (cultural connection through cuisine is one of the ways we can partner with YOUR organization), but also had the opportunity to read a piece that was submitted by a Zimbabwe author. This piece was penned by Ndaba Sibanda under the theme, sunrise.

We want to take this time to truly appreciate Alys and Sarah who have taken the time to craft programs and "spaces" where difference is celebrated. It is in such spaces that inclusion births shade trees that outlive generations and from this, true growth occurs (A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” -Greek Proverb).

It was an honor to be part of this event in 2020. Thank you @4cearts for crafting a project that encourages inclusion and celebrates diversity. . #AfricanAuthors #Zim #Zimbabwe #Books #IN #NdabaSibanda #Indy #ZimbabweanAuthors #Africa #Noblesville #Fishers @visithamiltonco @noblesvillein #Nairobi @noblesvillediversitycoalition @noblesvillecoc #OH #Chicago #Indiana #DC #Carmel #Anderson #Queens #Pendleton #Cicero #Sheridan #Columbus #Indy

In regards to movies and shows, we recommend Bienvenue à Marly-Gomont (original title) or The African Doctor (2016) on Netflix. If you do not speak French, the movie has subtitles in English. There is no audio option in English, but the movie is a feel good piece that shares a little more through the eyes of immigrants. The movie offers audio in Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish and Italian. It is based on a true story centered around a family of Congolese descent.

Recommending a non-English movie might not be the most popular thing to do, but to quote Bong Joon Ho as he received his Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film â€œOnce you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.”.

Growth requires discomfort.
